What Is Tinnitus?
Tinnitus is a symptom rather than an illness. It is generated within the hearing pathways and affects roughly one in ten people persistently. Stress and worry can make it more noticeable, and most people with tinnitus also have some degree of hearing loss.
Your Tinnitus Assessment
Your appointment starts with a conversation about your tinnitus: what it sounds like, when you notice it most, how it affects your daily life and any relevant medical history. Claire will also check your hearing, because hearing loss and tinnitus are so often linked. Once she has the full picture, she will explain what is likely to be going on and talk through the options with you.
Tinnitus Treatment and Management
There is currently no cure for tinnitus, so the aim is to reduce how much it bothers you. Claire will agree a plan with you based on your own symptoms, which may include:
- Clear advice on what tinnitus is and why it can feel worse at certain times
- Sound therapy, using background sound to make the tinnitus less noticeable
- Hearing aids, where there is hearing loss that can be helped
- Practical strategies for sleep, relaxation and coping when tinnitus flares up
Hearing Aids and Tinnitus
If your tinnitus comes with hearing loss, hearing aids can help in two ways. They make everyday sounds easier to hear, and the extra sound around you can draw attention away from the tinnitus. Some modern hearing aids also include built-in sound therapy features. Claire is independent and works with every major manufacturer, so any recommendation is based on what suits your hearing and your lifestyle.
